Avalanche probes

Avalanche probes: Essential equipment for mountain safety

Avalanche probes are essential tools for off-piste winter sports enthusiasts, such as ski touring, freeriding, and mountaineering. They are part of the essential safety equipment in the event of an avalanche, along with avalanche transceivers (ATs) and snow shovels. When a person is buried under snow, an avalanche probe can be used to locate the victim precisely and significantly reduce rescue time.

Why use an avalanche probe?

Avalanche probes are designed to be deployed quickly and provide accurate location. They allow rescuers to accurately identify the depth and location of a victim under the snow. Once the avalanche transceiver signal is picked up, the probe confirms the exact position and determines the depth, facilitating rapid excavation with a shovel. To carry all this equipment and stay safe, complete your gear selection with an airbag backpack, essential for off-piste safety.

Features to consider when choosing an avalanche probe

• Length: Probes generally range from 240 to 320 cm. Longer models offer greater reach, especially in cases of deep burials. However, shorter probes are lighter and easier to carry.
• Material: Probes are often made of aluminum, carbon, or alloys. Aluminum models are sturdy and affordable, while carbon models are lighter, ideal for skiers looking to minimize the weight of their equipment.
• Deployment system: Quick and efficient deployment is crucial in an emergency. Quick-lock systems allow the probe to be secured in seconds.

Tips for using avalanche probes

The effectiveness of avalanche probes depends on the ability to use them correctly. It is recommended that you take avalanche safety training and regularly practice using the probe, avalanche transceiver, and shovel. In the event of an avalanche, every second counts, and being well prepared can make all the difference.
