Arva: the brand’s origins and history

Arva is a French family-owned brand founded in 1984, headquartered in Annecy-le-Vieux, in the heart of the Alps. Its name is actually an acronym that has become a common term: ARVA stands for Appareil de Recherche de Victimes d'Avalanche (Avalanche Victim Search Device), a name so deeply rooted in French mountain culture that many still use “arva” as a synonym for avalanche transceiver.

It all began in 1985 with the launch of the ARVA 4000, the very first avalanche victim detector designed by the brand. This pioneering analog model had a range of only about 20 meters at the time, but it laid the foundation for expertise that would be refined over the next 40 years.

Product Development and Innovations at Arva

Arva’s core business is the avalanche transceiver. With 40 years of experience in the field, the brand has made significant advancements: from the analog ARVA 4000 model to the best-selling EVO 4 (now the EVO 5 in its compact 170g version), all the way to the NEO BT Pro, touted as the most high-performance avalanche transceiver in the lineup with Bluetooth connectivity.

In 2015, one of the first airbag packs equipped with the REACTOR system was launched: a patented dual-airbag system with a 150 L (2×75 L) capacity and a dual inflation system, designed to maximize buoyancy in the event of an avalanche while remaining compact and lightweight. Three patents have been filed for this innovation.

Arva has also developed FLEX technology, a modular system that allows the airbag pack’s cover to be changed in seconds to adapt the volume and use, while retaining the same airbag base. On the avalanche transceiver (AV-S) side, the SWITCH system allows users to quickly switch between transmit and search modes.

Arva offers a complete line of avalanche safety products: avalanche victim locators (EVO 4, EVO 5, NEO BT Pro), REACTOR airbag backpacks (available in 18-, 24-, 32-, and 40-liter versions, with Pro Flex variants), shovels (Access TS, Ski Trip), probes ( notably the Spark range), technical backpacks for ski touring and freeriding, as well as accessories.

The brand is particularly renowned for two flagship lines: its avalanche transceivers, used by a large number of mountain professionals, and its REACTOR airbag backpacks with FLEX technology, which allow the backpack’s volume to be adjusted according to the day’s outing.
