Ortovox was founded in 1980 by Gerald Kampel and Jürgen Wegner. At the time, they launched the first dual-frequency avalanche transceiver, the Ortovox F2. In 1985, the brand launched a rucksack model and an avalanche shovel. Ortovox continued to develop its products and expanded its range in 1988 with a wool sports collection: jackets, hiking jumpers, hats and gloves were all made from 100% sheep's wool. In order to offer quality products that were also comfortable, Ortovox innovated by creating its range of pullovers, hats and headbands in fleece, making these garments very light and easy to care for. As Ortovox's success grew, the brand began making technical underwear in merino wool for alpine skiing, ski touring and mountaineering.
