Discover the Mammut® brand

Mammut®: The Brand’s Origins and History

The company began operations in 1862 in the Swiss village of Dintikon as a small rope-making workshop. In 1943, products began to be marketed under the Mammut name, and the silhouette of a mammoth immediately became the brand’s iconic logo.

In the 1950s, Mammut launched its first nylon glacier rope, a major breakthrough for mountaineering safety. By 1952, the company had specialized in ropes for mountaineering and sailing.

Did you know?

The name Mammut was chosen to evoke power and robustness, two essential qualities for climbers and their gear. Even today, the black mammoth remains one of the most recognizable logos in the global outdoor industry.

In 1969, Mammut developed its first avalanche transceiver (ATC), the Barryvox® VS 86, for the Swiss Army. In the 1980s, the product line expanded to include technical gear, clothing, and footwear. In 1995, the Eiger Extreme collection was launched for extreme high-altitude mountaineering, co-developed with professional athletes.

Product Development and Innovations at Mammut®

Climbing ropes and Barryvox® avalanche transceivers are manufactured in Seon and bear the “Made in Switzerland” label, a guarantee of quality and safety. Mammut is notably a pioneer in dry-processing technology for ropes, using methods such as SuperDRY applied to both the sheath and the core of the rope to repel dirt and moisture from the equipment.

Beyond climbing, Mammut has also been a pioneer in airbag technology for ski and snowboard backpacks. The Eiger collection embodies the brand’s philosophy: finding the perfect balance between weight and durability for total efficiency in the high mountains. In 2023 and 2024, several Mammut products received the ISPO Award, a major international accolade in the sports industry.

Products offered by the Mammut® brand

The range covers items for hiking and trekking, as well as climbing, ski touring, and highly technical clothing for high-altitude mountaineering.

In the world of climbing and mountaineering, the selection is particularly comprehensive: ropes, harnesses, helmets, technical backpacks, and accessories. The equipment range also includes headlamps, crash pads, carabiners, and helmets.

Mammut®’s commitment to sustainability

Since 2011, Mammut has been a partner of the bluesign® system and uses environmentally friendly processes, PFC-free fabrics, and organic cotton. The brand is also committed to responsible sourcing of animal-derived materials, with RDS and RWS certifications, recycled down, and leather from responsible sources.

As a signatory to the UN Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action, Mammut has committed to reducing its CO₂ emissions by 30% by 2030, with a goal of achieving full carbon neutrality by 2050. The “Together for Glaciers” initiative raises public awareness about glacier retreat and mobilizes the outdoor community around the climate emergency.

A member of the Fair Wear Foundation since 2008, the group received the German National Sustainability Award in 2021 for a circular economy project and is regularly recognized for its transparency in the supply chain.
