Choosing ski touring boots

Choosing the right ski size
How do I choose the right rod size?

Hiking boots made for climbing... and descending

When ski touring, your boots are not just a detail. They determine every climb, every turn, every descent. Their mission? To offer maximum lightness on the ascent, real stability on the descent, and comfort you can feel with every step—without ever slowing you down. At Speck, you'll find models suited to all profiles: from occasional hikers to enthusiasts of long technical lines. Choose the right boots, and your whole season will be transformed.

Choosing the right ski touring boots: the criteria that matter

Choosing a ski touring boot means finding the right balance between easy climbing, stable descents, and compatibility with your equipment. Here's what you really need to look for:

  • Flex & support: The stiffer the flex, the more effective the boot will be on descents. A more flexible flex makes climbing easier. Choose according to your practice and level.
  • Weight: Less weight = less fatigue on the ascent. But be careful: ultra-light models are often less stable on the descent.
  • Binding compatibility: Make sure your boots are compatible with your bindings (low-tech, hybrid, or plate).
  • Size: Too tight and you're guaranteed blisters. Too big and you'll lose control. Take your measurements carefully and consult our ski size guide— the advice also applies to boots.
  • Comfort: Even without trying them on in a store, you can still get it right: thermoformable liners, foot width (volume), heel support... it all counts. And with a good pair of ski socks, you'll gain even more precision.

Which boot for which discipline?

You don't need the same model for powder skiing and groomed slopes. Here's how to make the right choice for your discipline:

  • Ski touring: Lightweight and freedom of movement are key. Your boots should have a "walk" mode, good grip, and be compatible with your touring bindings.
  • Alpine skiing: Look for precision, power, and good support on the descent. Ideal if you stay on the slopes or off-piste.
  • Cross-country skiing: Maximum lightness, flexibility, and thermal comfort. Your boots must also be compatible with the binding standards specific to this discipline.

In summary: each discipline has its own constraints and therefore its own ideal boot. It is better to choose a model that is suited to your needs rather than a "one-size-fits-all" model that will hinder you on the slopes.

Frequently asked questions

Ski touring boots are designed for both climbing and descending. They are lightweight, have rear flex and a walk mode that is essential for efficient climbing. Once locked, they regain the rigidity needed for good downhill performance. Classic alpine models, which are stiffer and heavier, do not allow this freedom of movement. They are designed for downhill skiing.

Hiking boots are designed for the mountains, not for strolling around after a session. Their thermal insulation is designed for exertion, not for comfort when resting. If you're staying in the resort or going out after your activities, it's better to wear waterproof après-ski boots that are suitable for extreme temperatures. Two uses, two boots. One is not a substitute for the other.

Several brands stand out for their technical expertise and reliability:

  • Dynafit: specialist in ultra-lightweight, high-performance models for pure touring.
  • Scarpa: a must-have for mountaineering and freeriding, with sturdy and precise models.
  • Atomic: the Backland range offers a good balance between comfort and performance.
  • Salomon: perfect for those looking for a mix of comfort and downhill performance.
  • Scott, K2, Tecnica: reliable brands for more committed skiers or technical descents.

The choice will depend on your body type, your goals in the mountains, and your bindings.
