Choosing ski boots to suit your style of skiing

To choose a ski boot that's perfectly suited to your feet, it's important to know your level and the type of skiing you do. Alpine skiing, freeride skiing, freestyle skiing, all-mountain skiing, ski touring... Depending on your discipline, you won't need the same boots.

As well as the type of skiing you do, you also need to consider your level: beginner, intermediate, advanced or expert. This will enable you to choose the most suitable pair of shoes for you

Determining the flex of your shoe

The flex of your boot will depend on your level of skiing and your build.

But what is flex?

Flex is an indicator of your boot's rigidity. The higher the flex, the stiffer your shoe, and therefore the more reactive it will be

On the other hand, a softer flex will be more forgiving and more comfortable.

The choice of flex is therefore crucial.

For men, it is generally considered that :

  • A flex of 60 to 70 is designed for beginner to intermediate skiers;
  • A flex of 80 to 110 is designed for intermediate to advanced skiers;
  • A flex of 120 to 150 is designed for expert skiers.

For women, we consider that :

  • A flex of 50 to 70 is designed for beginner to intermediate women skiers;
  • A flex of 80 to 90 is for intermediate to advanced skiers;
  • A flex of 100 to 110 is for expert women skiers.

Warning:

A flex that is too rigid for an average skier will be a limiting factor in their progress.

For a very heavy and powerful skier, the flex of the boot will need to be increased.

The type of skiing is also a determining factor: a freestyle boot does not require the same qualities of grip and flex as a piste boot, where the transmission of pressure is very important.

Choosing the width of your boot

Every foot is unique, so it's vital to choose the right pair of ski boots, and to take the time to do so.

The figure given as the last of the ski boot corresponds to its width at the front of the foot. Ranging from 92mm to 104mm, there's a boot width to suit every foot. The last of the boot is given for a sample size of 26.5, but be aware that if your foot is larger, the width of the boot you try on will be greater.

Your foot should be wrapped evenly, with good support for the metatarsals and heel. On the other hand, the toes must be able to move freely. The foot must not be compressed. The volume of your footwear is very important when choosing your boots for this winter.

Choosing the size of your ski boots

Finally, it may seem obvious, but you need to choose the right ski boot size. This is measured in Mondo Point or MSS for -Metric Sizing System. This is the length of the foot in centimetres. When flexing, the toes should touch the tip of the boot.

Customisation

Some pairs of ski boots now come with a thermoformable liner. This allows them to adapt exactly to your body shape. The most advanced models now have a customisable shell.
