Choosing the right ski size

Speck-Sports gives you a few tips to help you choose your alpine skis so that you can select the model that suits you best.

1) Assess your level

Before buying your skis, it's essential to define your technical level. A model adapted to your level will give you maximum pleasure and comfort!

- Beginner: for you, skiing is brand new! You alternate skidding and snowploughing. You'll ski at low speed on green or blue runs.
- Intermediate: you'll start to feel at ease with parallel turns and skiing on red runs.
- Advanced: whatever the colour, you'll be able to ski all the slopes, but of course there's always room for improvement.
- Expert: skiing is your domain. Your technique allows you to experience intense sensations on and off piste, you master all types of terrain and know all the different turning techniques.

2) Determine your riding style

To find a model suited to your use and your desires, you need to define the terrain in which you want to ski.

- Piste: you're a piste enthusiast and like to take advantage of the whole ski area.
- All Mountain: you love the slopes but are open to discovering what's going on next door, when conditions allow! Choose a versatile ski that will allow you to be at ease on all types of snow.
- Freeride: you spend most of your time off the slopes in search of powder. Your aim: to make your own tracks. Choose a long ski with a wide runner for more lift in fresh snow.
- Freestyle: Kickers, rails and half-pipes, the snowpark holds no secrets for you. Choose a short ski with double tips to improve pop and make your jumps easier.

3) Choose the size of your skis

The size of your skis depends not only on your height, but also on your ability and the type of skiing you do. Short skis give you better manoeuvrability, while long skis offer greater stability and more lift. A beginner skier or freestyle enthusiast will opt for nose-high skis, while an experienced skier, speed freak or freerider will prefer a longer ski.
To help you determine your ideal ski size, refer to this table:
