In the resorts, the marked runs are prepared to offer regular conditions, but for thrill-seekers, off-piste allows you to explore natural, ungroomed terrain. However, off-piste skiing requires a good technique and a high level of vigilance in the face of avalanche risks. But if you're an expert skier and take part in slalom competitions, you could opt for a pair of racing skis.

Choosing the right alpine skis

Your choice of alpine skis depends on a number of factors, including your ability, your skiing style and the snow conditions. Here are a few criteria to consider:

• Level of ability: Beginner skis are generally more flexible and forgiving, while expert models offer better responsiveness and grip for more technical skiing.
• Type of terrain: For marked runs, skis with a narrow sidecut and short turn radius offer manoeuvrability and precision. If you like to combine piste and off-piste skiing, choose wider all-mountain skis that can float on powder but still perform well on hard snow. Off-piste or freeride skis are wider, so you can ski down powder.
• Ski length: In general, the longer your skis, the more stable they will be at high speeds, which is an advantage on piste and off-piste. Shorter, more manoeuvrable skis are better suited to beginners and those who like tight turns.
