Test of the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 tent

With a new configuration of hoops around a hub, Big Agnes claims a 20% gain in interior volume. The walls are much more vertical.

This Copper Spur HV UL2 weighs 1.45 kg on the scales. Admittedly, this is heavier than the Fly Creek, but the two apses are undeniably a plus for storing your gear when the weather turns bad. The tent is, of course, self-supporting. The fabric is 20 denier (30 D for an MSR Hubba, 15 D for a Freelite, for example). For slightly rougher, stony terrain, it seems almost essential to invest in a footprint if you want to extend the tent's lifespan.

In the field:

Set-up is extremely quick (not even 5 minutes). You can't go wrong, just match the colors of the ends of the poles and the canvas. The tent comes with eight pegs and a repair sleeve in case a pole breaks.

Two average-sized people will find sufficient space in width and length. Larger people can opt for a 3-seater for greater comfort.

Condensation is well controlled thanks to sufficient space between the flysheet and the inner liner, as well as ventilation at the top of the outer liner.

The apses are large enough to store your backpack and gear (or even the dog :) )

We didn't experience any lasting rain, but the tent did its job in a thunderstorm. No waterproofing problems noted.

In conclusion:

This Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 is ideal for weight-conscious hikers. The quality of its construction is unquestionable. However, you should invest in a Footprint to protect it from the ground, and consider the Copper Spur HV UL3 if you're a taller rider.
