BLUE ICE: The Brand’s Origins and History
The Blue Ice adventure began in 2008 in the Chamonix region, in a garage where a few friends passionate about mountaineering and climbing decided to design the gear they’d always dreamed of. With a philosophy centered on “getting back to basics, ” they developed their first products without yet knowing where this adventure would take them, but with a strong conviction: to create equipment that is truly useful for high-altitude mountaineering.
The turning point came in 2011 with the launch of the Choucas harness, the first mountaineering harness in history to weigh under 150 grams. This innovation propelled the brand into the spotlight and established the identity of a manufacturer dedicated to lightweight design without compromising on durability. Between 2011 and 2016, iconic products emerged, such as the Warthog backpack, designed in collaboration with high-altitude mountain guides, followed by the Dragonfly, its ultralight version.
In 2016, the small company moved into new offices in Les Houches, designed to minimize their environmental impact. The following year, Blue Ice opened a second office in Salt Lake City, at the foot of the Rockies, giving the brand a transatlantic reach while retaining its alpine DNA.
Did you know?
The Choucas Light harness, which weighs just 84 grams in size S, accompanied Polish mountaineer Andrzej Bargiel to the summit of K2 during his full-skied descent in 2018, one of the most remarkable feats in modern ski mountaineering.
Product Development and Innovation at Blue Ice
Innovation at Blue Ice is based on a very practical approach: all products are designed, tested, and refined by the teams in Chamonix and Salt Lake City, who practice mountaineering, climbing, and skiing daily in their respective playgrounds between the Alps and the Rockies. This close connection to the terrain explains the consistency of the product lines: each product serves a specific purpose, with no unnecessary features.
The brand has made the quest for every gram a true hallmark, without ever sacrificing durability or functionality. This philosophy results in some of the lightest harnesses on the market, technical backpacks with meticulous finishes, and ice screws made of aluminum and stainless steel alloys. Feedback from high-mountain guides constantly fuels product development, and several models have been recognized with international awards such asthe ISPO Award.
Products offered by the Blue Ice brand
Blue Ice now offers a complete range covering three disciplines: mountaineering, rock climbing, and ski touring. The lineup includes harnesses, technical backpacks, ice axes such as the Hummingbird, Aero Lite ice screws, as well as slings and webbing.
The brand is particularly renowned for two flagship products: the Choucas harness, which has become the gold standard among high-mountain guides thanks to its virtually unbeatable balance of weight, comfort, and functionality, and the Firecrest pack, a versatile four-season alpine pack suitable for both summer mountaineering and demanding ski touring expeditions.
Blue Ice’s Eco-Responsible Commitment
Blue Ice is a member of the 1% for the Planet collective and donates 1% of its annual revenue to environmental organizations dedicated to preserving mountain environments. This initiative is part of a broader vision championed by the brand: “to focus on preserving the mountains rather than conquering them.”
