The history of the Primus brand
It all began in a small blacksmith's workshop in central Stockholm in 1892, when F.W. Lindqvist and J.V. Svenson created the world's first soot-free paraffin stove! As it was the first, they decided to call it Primus (meaning the first). The name became synonymous with reliable stoves, and the stoves became the first choice for people setting off on both first ascents and demanding expeditions. One of the landmark adventures was when Roald Amundsen became the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911. Another milestone was that of Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary on Mount Everest in 1953, who were the first to reach the summit.
The outdoor community has continued to grow and in 1999 Primus opened the factory in Tartu, Estonia to meet the demand. Their commitment to ensuring the highest quality 'made in Europe' products continues to be a key element of production. To this day, Primus remains the only stove manufacturer that still produces its stoves in Europe. Every stage, from initial design to production, is carried out in-house at the R&D site and in the field. Each product undergoes extensive testing and intensive quality control procedures.
The range of stoves
The Primus range of stoves is divided into three product categories:
Camping stoves :
Larger stoves with one or two burners for your hut at the bottom of the garden or your camp by the water.
Suitable for cooking for many people.
Stable and suitable for large pots and frying pans.
Easy to assemble and pack.
Trekking stoves:
These are gas stoves designed for long journeys with a rucksack.
Light to carry and simple to use.
Ideal for simple cooking and boiling water.
Economical on fuel.
Expedition stoves:
Optimised for longer expeditions and extreme conditions.
Suitable for gaseous and liquid fuels.
Extremely robust.
Simple to use in the field.
Quality first:
Expedition and trekking stoves undergo a final check before leaving the Primus factory. Each one is tested by hand: Primus checks for leaks, lights them and makes sure they burn exactly as they should. This means there may be some tarnish around the burner when you take them out of the box. These little marks are your assurance that your new stove is in perfect working order and ready for years of safe, reliable service.
This is what Primus calls "Exploration Ready" and as proof that your expedition or trekking stove is tested, you'll find on your Primus stove an accompanying "Exploration Ready" label signed by the person who tested your stove.
