While it's very easy to stock up on drinking water for short hikes in France, a filtering water bottle becomes almost indispensable when you're setting off for several days in remote places or countries where treated or drinking water is unavailable.
You can always boil your water or use purifying tablets, but the advantage of the Katadyn BEFREE water bottle is that you get purified water straight away.
Available in several formats, the Katadyn BEFREE bottle is capable of eliminating 99.9% of bacteria and protozoa (but not viruses). Simply take the clearest, least stagnant water possible, close the bottle and press to drink.
The filter (EZ clea membrane), made of hollow fibres, allows the water to pass through easily. You can expect a flow rate of 2 litres per minute. This means you can quickly fill other containers. It has an estimated lifespan of 1000 litres, and all you have to do to clean it is rinse the filter with clean water.
The bottle is flexible and lightweight. It's made by Hydrapak, whose products are renowned for their quality.
The only downside: The filter on this Katadyn BEFREE does not remove the chlorinated or slightly muddy taste.
