How to choose a headlamp

Are you planning a trek, a mountain hike, a ski touring session , a cycle outing or even a jog? If you're going to extend your outings or go out at night, make sure you have a suitable headlamp. This is an essential accessory for your bag. Depending on what you do and where you go, your needs in terms of lighting and autonomy will vary. At Speck-Sports we can help you choose the right equipment for your outdoor activities.

What is a headlamp?

The origin of the headlamp

The headlamp, invented in the 19th century by Gustave Trouvé, is a portable light attached to the head by means of an elastic strap. Initially used by miners, the headlamp then came to accompany first-aid workers, then cavers. Finally, as an accessory for a variety of outdoor activities at night or in dark places , the headlamp is now also used for hiking, camping, running...

With a headlamp, you can keep your hands free and still have a beam of light to shine ahead. Headlamps are either battery-powered or rechargeable. They offer different lighting modes depending on the model (variable intensity, red light to preserve night vision, etc.).

LED headlamps

Headlamps with LED lighting (light-emitting diodes) are appreciated for their efficiency in terms of energy, lifespan and brightness. These products are becoming increasingly common on the market. They are available from Petzl, Led Lenser, Black Diamond and many other brands... Equipping your headlamp with LEDs will give you good lighting with low power consumption. The LEDs found in top-of-the-range headlamp models consume less battery power at low intensity, while at the same time providing very bright illumination (but at full power, the LEDs will consume more power).

Incandescent headlamps

Incandescent headlamps were widely used before the advent of LEDs (light-emitting diodes), which are more efficient and last longer. However, some people still prefer incandescent headlamps for their warm, natural light and low initial cost. Compared with LED headlamps, the incandescent lamp has a shorter lifespan.

Hybrid headlamps

Hybrid" in the context of headlamps refers to the lamp's ability to operate on two different types of power supply: either 3 AAA batteries (supplied with the lamp), or a high-capacity battery that can be recharged via USB. Petzl, for example, offers Hybrid models with a Core battery (for some headlamps, the battery is included).

Features for choosing a headlamp

Power and lighting mode

There are a multitude of headlamps on the market. Depending on whether you're hiking at night, trail running or camping, your lighting needs will differ. Each lamp has its own characteristics in terms of power, expressed in Lumens, and lighting modes. Lumen output will therefore have a major impact on the level of brightness provided by your flashlight. Indeed, the higher the lumens, the greater the intensity and visibility. Headlamps also offer different lighting modes. These vary from model to model.

- Red mode: see without being seen (by animals, for example). This mode is practical if you want to camp and observe the wildlife around you.
- Low or eco mode: for prolonged use to conserve your headlamp's autonomy, with lighting at its weakest. Ideal for bivouacs, for example.
- Medium mode: to accompany you on a night hike, without requiring too much battery power.
- High mode: generally used for hiking or running, this mode considerably reduces your headlamp's autonomy.
- Boost mode: maximum power for your headlamp! This lighting mode is used only occasionally and not for extended periods (so as not to use up all your battery life), and is ideal for briefly illuminating long distances or steep passages.
- Reactive Lighting" mode : this technology, developed by Petzl for its "Performance" range, adjusts lighting instantly, without any action on your part.

Battery and autonomy

There are two types of power supply in the headlamp range. You can choose between battery-powered models and rechargeable headlamps. Investing in a battery-powered headlamp does not mean that it will be less powerful or less autonomous. On the contrary, for some models, autonomy is doubled. Battery-powered headlamps, on the other hand, have a major advantage. When you're out hiking or bivouacking for several days, you can recharge your headlamp at any time. With a solar charger, you won't have to worry about running out of battery power.

Hybrid headlamps, on the other hand, switch between battery and rechargeable power. So when the battery is discharged, you can switch to battery operation. Make sure you have enough batteries and/or a charger for your outdoor adventures, so you don't run out of light!

Which headlamp for which activity?

At Speck-Sports, we make sure to offer a wide range of headlamps to meet the needs of each and every one of you. Find out which type of headlamp is right for you, depending on your activity.

Camping

You don't necessarily need to invest in a top-of-the-range headlamp. For a bivouac, you can opt for a battery-powered lamp with up to 100 lumens. The intensity of the light will be enough to prick the sardines in your tent or light your stove.

Hiking

For this sport, opt for lightweight, space-saving models that can easily be worn with or without a helmet. A 100-150 lumen headlamp will be enough to light your way and keep you moving. On the other hand, if you're taking on a more technical trail, you'll want a more powerful headlamp (up to 300 lumens).

Trail running

When it comes to nocturnal activities, it's important to be well-equipped for trail running, ultratrail or jogging. Think of these 3 criteria to guide your headlamp purchase: comfort, power and autonomy. Your headlamp needs to be ergonomically designed so that it doesn't get in the way during your run. There's nothing more unpleasant than equipment that doesn't fit! In terms of power, opt for a headlamp with 200 lumens or more. For greater visual comfort, you can also opt for Petzl's Reactiv Lighting models, whose beam adapts thanks to an integrated sensor. You'll be able to move along your route without having to worry about a thing!

Mountaineering

You'll need to be more demanding in terms of the lamp you use for this sport. You'll need a high-powered headlamp if you're to enjoy the mountains with complete peace of mind. Choose a headlamp with a wattage of over 300 lumens. You should also check the weight of your model, depending on your needs. Some headlamps are lightweight (less than 100g), while more technical models can weigh up to 300 grams. You'll also need a mountaineering headlamp that's resistant to temperature drops, so you don't lose too much autonomy.

Choosing accessories

Accessories for headlamps can be very useful for improving their operation and comfort of use. Here are a few examples of common accessories:

- Replacement headbands: to replace your headlamp's original headband when worn, damaged or dirty, for optimum comfort.
- Spare batteries: essential for prolonging the life of your headlamp during outdoor activities, especially if you're planning a long hike or camping trip.
- Attachment clips: these allow you to attach your headlamp to a backpack or belt, for quick and easy access to light.
- Carrying pouches: protect your headlamp from knocks and scratches during transport or storage.

These accessories may vary between headlamp models, so be sure to check the options available for your specific model.
