The Black Crows MENTIS BIRDIE FREEBIRD skis are designed for ski tourers looking for a lightweight, precise alpine ski for their mountain excursions. With an 80 mm waist and a paulownia core, they prioritize lightness while maintaining a characterful alpine feel. Their construction—combining fiberglass and carbon fibers with a titanal reinforcement under the bindings—provides excellent stability on the descent. The tip rocker facilitates pivoting and lift-off, while the long classic camber ensures extended ski-to-snow contact for smooth, consistent turns.

A lightweight touring ski for tackling consecutive ascents

Designed for ski touring, the Black Crows MENTIS BIRDIE FREEBIRD ski emphasizes lightness to make long ascents easier. The paulownia core—a wood species known for its light weight—directly helps reduce fatigue during extended ascents. The mixed glass/carbon fibers ensure structural integrity while keeping the ski’s weight down, improving efficiency with every step. Weighing 1,000 g per ski in the standard 171 cm length, this model ranks among the alpine touring skis best suited for days with significant elevation gain. The 80 mm waist width offers an appealing balance between float and precision, allowing you to ski with confidence across varied terrain.

A technical construction for precise handling

The Black Crows MENTIS BIRDIE FREEBIRD skis feature a semi-cap construction with a tip cap, designed to reduce weight while maintaining good maneuverability. This structural design keeps the ski responsive, which is useful for quickly adjusting your line on technical terrain. The ABS edges—except at the tip—enhance durability in the most heavily stressed areas and contribute to reliable grip on hard snow. The long classic camber provides extended contact between the ski and the snow, promoting a characterful alpine-style turn with smooth transitions between edge-to-edge shifts. The front rocker, designed for pivoting and lift, helps you initiate turns and maintain control when the snow becomes softer or more uneven.

Stability, forgiveness, and a secure fit

The 19-meter turning radius, combined with a medium flex along the entire length of the ski, contributes to a stable yet accessible ride. This medium flex offers a balance between performance and forgiveness, allowing you to handle longer turns without requiring excessive effort at each edge. The mounting point, located 9.5 cm from the center of the ski, contributes to directional stability, which is useful for maintaining a clear line on the descent. The Titanal reinforcement under the bindings secures the binding assembly by better distributing stress, which is important for long-term reliability. The tip cap construction and material choices also prioritize maneuverability, a key advantage during uphill turns or tight passages. Finally, it should be noted that this model is not compatible with telemark skiing.
