DOMETIC: The Brand’s Origins and History

Dometic’s story begins with an innovative idea: creating a cooling effect by using heat. It was Baltzar von Platen and Carl Munters, two Swedish students, who designed this system between 1919 and 1922. With no compressor or moving parts, they invented the world’s first absorption refrigerator—a revolutionary technology that was quickly acquired by the giant Electrolux.

In the late 1960s, Electrolux named its leisure equipment division Dometic. In 2001, Electrolux sold its interests in the leisure market to EQT, a private equity firm, and Dometic became independent. In 2015, Dometic went public on the Stockholm Stock Exchange.

In 2021, Dometic acquired Front Runner Vehicle Outfitters, a major player in off-road accessories (racks, bars, awnings, drawers). Since then, Front Runner products have evolved under the Front Runner Dometic banner, combining Front Runner’s durability with Dometic’s technologies. This acquisition exemplifies the brand’s strategy: to become the most comprehensive equipment provider for everyone who lives and sleeps outdoors.

At Dometic, our ambition is to shape a more sustainable future by enabling people to reconnect with nature through smart, durable, and responsibly designed products. The brand specifically opts for the use of recycled materials such as REDUX WeatherShield. This lightweight polyester, made entirely from recycled plastic bottles, is Global Recycled Standard certified.
