Montura: The Brand’s Origins and History
Montura was founded in the Dolomites, a region of majestic landscapes and extreme conditions. In 1987, the brand took its first steps as a small company dedicated to mountaineering and climbing apparel, with a simple goal: to offer gear capable of withstanding the most extreme conditions while remaining comfortable and practical.
Its headquarters are located in the Trentino region, at the foot of the Dolomites, and the company now employs over 1,000 people. The name Montura comes from an old Italian word that originally meant “military uniform and all its accessories,” an etymology that takes on full meaning for modern outdoor activities.
Did you know?
Montura’s unofficial slogan is “Searching for a New Way,” a philosophy that encapsulates the spirit of exploration and adventure at the heart of the brand since its inception.
Product Development and Innovations at Montura
Montura was born from the idea of reinventing technical outdoor apparel by designing ergonomic, high-performance pieces for the mountains. From thermal underwear to windbreakers and trekking pants, every product is designed to offer comfort, protection, and freedom of movement.
The brand is particularly popular in the mountaineering and ski touring communities thanks to its lightweight, ergonomic, and highly durable clothing. Its workshops, located in Italy, ensure that every finish meets high standards, with an attention to detail that sets it apart from its competitors.
The brand’s ambassadors are“people, not celebrities,”which once again positions the company as a brand that’s close to its customers. Among them are mountain guides, mountaineers, backpackers, and legends such as Fausto De Stefani, who successfully climbed all fourteen peaks over 8,000 meters.
Products offered by the Montura brand
Montura covers mountain activities, mountaineering, skiing, trekking, and more, with a complete range spanning from base layers to waterproof jackets, including fleeces, technical pants, and accessories.
Montura jackets incorporate advanced technologies to withstand inclement weather: waterproof and breathable, they keep you dry while wicking away sweat, whether on an alpine expedition or a forest trail. The stretchy, durable pants are perfectly suited for technical movements like climbing or ski touring, with well-designed reinforcements for both summer and winter.
The brand also offers the Montura Editing line, its cultural initiative active for over 20 years, which supports documentary, film, and educational projects related to the world of mountaineering and exploration.
Montura’s Eco-Responsible Commitment
Montura is firmly committed to making a positive impact on mountain communities worldwide through cultural and social projects, with significant resources allocated each year to make culture accessible to a wider audience. For the brand, there can be no climate responsibility without social responsibility.
On the environmental front, Montura uses PFAS-free water-repellent treatments (DWR FC0) on its textiles, offering the same comfort in the rain as previous treatments but with a lower environmental impact. The brand produces the majority of its clothing in Europe, thereby limiting its transportation footprint and ensuring strict quality control throughout the production chain.
Montura also supports the Senza Frontiere Foundation - ONLUS, founded in 1998 on the initiative of Fausto De Stefani, a mountaineer and iconic figure of the brand. This foundation promotes self-managed development projects in developing countries, including the Rarahil Memorial School in Kirtipur, Nepal, which provides training and education to young people without removing them from their home communities.
