Nutrition for hiking and camping: everything you need to eat outdoors

When you're hiking or camping, eating well is essential to meeting your energy needs throughout the day. Choosing the right meals and foods can make all the difference in maintaining your energy, whether you're on a multi-day trek or a day trip in the mountains.

Light, high-energy foods for your adventures

When packing for a hike or trek, weight plays a crucial role. Choose light, dry foods such as freeze-dried meals, energy bars or dried fruit. These options concentrate maximum energy in minimum weight. Meals based on rice, pasta or vegetarian proteins are also excellent solutions for your main meals, as they provide a good balance between energy and nutrients.

A diet adapted to exercise

During long days of walking or mountaineering, your body needs a steady supply of calories to maintain your performance. Energy bars and breads are ideal for a quick snack during the day. For meals, opt for simple, quick-to-prepare dishes, such as freeze-dried meals or ready-to-use mixes. Vegetarian eaters will also find plenty of tasty options to meet their nutritional needs.

Hydration: a key element

Don't forget thatwater is just as important as food. Always carry a water bottle or filtration system to refill your reserves along the way. Good hydration is essential for getting the most out of your food and staying efficient throughout the day.

Tips for eating well when hiking and camping

• Prepare your meals in advance: divide up your portions to avoid carrying more food than you need.
• Vary your meals: alternate between hot dishes such as soups or rice, and lighter snacks such as dried fruit or bars.
• Optimize your pack: choose food that's easy to carry, doesn't take up too much space, but is rich in energy, such as pasta- or rice-based dishes.
