Ski base maintenance: Waxing and essential care for high-quality gliding

Taking care of your ski bases is crucial to ensuring smooth and enjoyable skiing throughout the winter season. Maintaining your skis, especially waxing alpine skis, keeps your bases in good condition and optimizes your experience on the snow. Whether you are a beginner or an expert alpine skier, knowing the steps involved in maintenance and waxing is essential for preserving your equipment and improving the quality of your skiing.

Why wax ski bases?

Waxing allows the bases to glide better on the snow and protects the base of your skis from wear and tear. Abrasive snow, temperature changes, and contact with ice can damage ski bases. Waxing your skis prevents excessive friction and increases the durability of your bases.

Steps for maintaining your bases

  1. Cleaning the bases: Before waxing, start by cleaning the bases to remove any residue and impurities. Use a suitable brush to prepare the base of the ski.

  2. Choosing wax: The type of wax depends on the snow temperature and the type of glide you want. Waxing products come in several types of paraffin, suitable for cold, warm, or intermediate temperatures. Choose the wax that meets the needs of the day, whether it's hot waxing or base waxing for the season.

  3. Applying wax: Using a waxing iron, apply a thin layer of wax to the base. Always work in the direction of glide, from the tip to the tail, for even distribution. Use about 15 grams of wax for each ski to achieve a uniform layer.

  4. Scraping: After allowing the wax to cool, scrape it with a scraper to remove excess wax and ensure smooth gliding. This step is crucial to prevent any buildup that could slow down the ski.

  5. Brushing the bases: Once scraped, the bases should be brushed with a special brush to achieve a perfect finish. This helps smooth the bases and improves glide by opening up the micro-pores in the wax.

Essential products and tools

For high-quality waxing, equip yourself with specific products and tools such as Vola wax, a waxing iron, a brush, a scraper, and a base cleaner. These tools are specially designed to facilitate maintenance and ensure optimal results with each operation.

By taking care of your ski bases, you ensure a better skiing experience and extend the life of your equipment. Regular maintenance, including cleaning, waxing, and brushing, is the key to fully enjoying the pleasures of skiing, whether on fresh snow or in difficult conditions.
