ATK HY 13 FREE ORANGE Bindings

ATK HY 13 FREE ORANGE: the hybrid binding that blurs the line between ski touring and freeriding

The ATK HY 13 FREE ORANGE ski touring binding is designed for skiers who refuse to choose between efficiency on the ascent and power on the descent. Built around a hybrid design, it’s tailored for demanding freeriders and ski tourers who are comfortable on wide skis and in challenging terrain. Its promise is clear: to deliver downhill sensations comparable to an alpine binding, without sacrificing lightness or comfort on the ascent. Weighing 675 g per half-pair, it puts technical performance at the heart of every outing, from groomed trails to steep slopes.

Front toe piece: flat ski position and generous elastic travel

The front toe piece of the ATK HY 13 FREE ORANGE is based on a key design principle: the ski position is perfectly flat, eliminating the height difference between the pins characteristic of classic PIN TECH bindings. This design effectively brings the skiing feel closer to that of an alpine binding, ensuring direct transmission of lateral pressure. The front binding’s elastic travel reaches 18 mm per side, providing significant tolerance to impacts and vibrations on varied terrain without causing unintended releases. An adjustable anti-friction device (AFD) completes the system, optimizing sole glide during release for consistent release regardless of the boot used.

Heel piece: power transmission and alpine elastic travel

The heel piece of the HY 13 FREE ORANGE is designed to precisely transmit every push. Its 9 mm elastic travel absorbs the dynamic stresses of the descent while maintaining firm contact with the sole. Boot size adjustment is available over a 25 mm range, allowing the binding to be adapted to different foot shapes without compromising the overall rigidity of the assembly. All 22 structural components per half-pair are machined from solid 7075 aluminum, an alloy renowned for its stiffness-to-weight ratio, and reinforced with POM and stainless steel in areas subject to friction and corrosion.

Climbing wedges: three angles to adapt to any incline

Climbing efficiency relies on a three-position climbing wedge system, adjustable to match the slope and the effort exerted. The –18 mm negative position improves comfort on flat terrain or during traverses by reducing strain on the calves. The intermediate position at +10 mm is suitable for moderate slopes, while the high position at +42 mm effectively relieves muscle strain during sustained climbs. This natural walking motion, combined with the front pivot unlocked in hiking mode, maintains a smooth foot roll throughout the entire ascent.

Safety and release: DIN range 6–13 and controlled hybrid performance

The release value is adjustable from 6 to 13 DIN, covering a range from skiers weighing 60 kg to the most dedicated skiers weighing up to 120 kg. This independent adjustment between the toe piece and heel piece allows you to fine-tune the binding’s performance according to your skiing style and snow conditions. Lateral and vertical release are calibrated to provide reliable release in the event of a fall, while resisting unwanted stresses generated by steep-slope or freeride skiing. The entire system helps minimize unintended releases without compromising release safety.

Compatibility and Equipment: Versatile Boots and Integrated Brake

The HY 13 FREE ORANGE is compatible with three boot standards—Alpine (ISO 5355), GripWalk (ISO 23223), and Touring (ISO 9523)—making it compatible with virtually all current touring and freeride boots, including models with PIN TECH inserts. The integrated Hy Brake System automatically locks in walk mode, eliminating the need for manual adjustment during transitions. The available ski-stop widths—97 mm, 108 mm, and 120 mm—cover a wide range of skis with waist widths between 90 and 120 mm. Compatibility with crampons is built-in, a decisive advantage for outings in icy conditions.

The ATK HY 13 FREE ORANGE is designed for skiers who regularly tackle challenging terrain, combining sustained elevation gain with technical descents on wide skis. Its hybrid design, machined materials, and wide adjustment range make it a well-rounded binding for those who refuse to compromise between ascents and descents.
