Defining your level of snowboarding and your riding style
To choose the right snowboard, it's essential to define your riding style, i.e. what you mainly do when you're on your board.
There are 3 main categories of snowboarding.
- Freestyle: For those who spend their winter in a snowpark. You like jumping, taking the rails, doing tricks on the piste, etc
- Freeride: For those who swear by off-piste skiing. For you, a day of carving on the piste is a wasted day. You like to ride big curves in fresh snow, pick up a lot of speed and make big slashes in snowdrifts
- All-mountain: For those who don't like to choose! You like cruising down the slopes, jumping the little tables in the park, venturing into the forest and tracking down a couloir. In short, you want versatility
Choosing the shape of your snowboard
The shape of the board is made up of the shape of the board, the tips and the flex. The shape determines the performance of your snowboard, depending on how you use it. There are two types of shape: Twin Tip and directional.
Twin Tip shape
A Twin Tip board is symmetrical in terms of shape, flex, camber and tip lift. The binding inserts are offset on the board. This type of shape favours freestyle riding, facilitates switch riding and is easy to ride. A Twin Tip board is the ideal weapon for park and piste tricks.
Directional shape
A directional board is asymmetrical. The nose and tail are different, so the board has a direction of travel. In general, the front tip is longer and more progressive. The inserts are offset towards the back of the board. This type of snowboard favours all-terrain riding and speed.
Choosing the right board size
For versatile use and an "average" body size, the ideal is to choose a board 20cm shorter than your height. If you're 1.80m tall, we'd advise you to choose a 1.60m board. Bigger men or women should choose the bigger size, and smaller people the smaller size.
Pure freestylers can go down to minus 25cm and those who swear by big powder runs can take a board just under their size (from 10 to 0cm)
