Snowboard size guide
How to choose the right snowboard size?
1) Define your riding level and style
To choose the right board for you, it's essential to define your riding style, i.e. what you mainly do when you're on your board.
We can define 3 categories of riding:
- Freestyle: you spend most of your time in a snowpark. You like jumpering, taking the rails, doing tricks on the slope - in short, tricks are your main passion
- Freeride: you spend your time looking for the best line off the slopes. For you, a day of carving on the piste is a day of failure. You'd rather ride big curves in fresh snow, pick up maximum speed and make big slashes in snowdrifts.
- All-mountain: your playground, the whole mountain. You like cruising down the piste, jumpering the little tables in the park, venturing into the forest, tracing a couloir. What you're looking for is absolute versatility.
2) Choose the shape of your board
The board's shape is made up of the shape of the board, its tips and its flex. The shape determines the board's performance, depending on your riding style. Twin Tip or directional? That's the question.
- A Twin Tip board is symmetrical in terms of shape, flex, camber and tip rise, with the binding inserts centered on the board. This type of shape favors freestyle riding, facilitates switch riding and confers ease of handling. A Twin Tip board is the ideal weapon for park and piste tricks.
- A directional board is asymmetrical. The nose and tail are differentiated, so the board has a riding direction. In general, the front tip is longer and more progressive, and the inserts are offset towards the back of the board. This type of board favors all-terrain riding and speed.
3) Determine your board size
For all-purpose use and an "average" board size, choose a board that's 20 cm shorter than your height. That's the basics. Now, strong riders will take the size above and girls the size below. Pure freestylers can go down to minus 25 cm, and those who swear by big powder runs can take a board just under their size (from 10 cm to 0cm).
