The POC Fornix BC Ski Helmet: Protection and Lightweight Design for Backcountry and Resort Skiing
Designed for skiers who enjoy both off-piste and resort skiing, the POC Fornix BC meets high standards for protection and practicality. Its hybrid construction combines a rigid polycarbonate shell, aramid reinforcements, and an EPS liner to offer a balance between structural strength and lightness, with a claimed weight of 500 grams. Designed for both ski touring and resort runs, it incorporates several complementary safety technologies that make it a versatile helmet for everyday use. Its unisex design and three size ranges (51–54, 55–58, and 59–62) allow it to fit a wide variety of head shapes.
Construction and Protection: A Design Engineered for Impacts
The construction of the POC Fornix BC ski helmet is based on a hybrid approach: the polycarbonate outer shell provides structural rigidity, while aramid reinforcements enhance penetration resistance—a feature particularly relevant for outings in rugged terrain. The EPS inner liner absorbs energy during a direct impact. The helmet is certified to CE EN 1077-B and ASTM F2040, two standards that attest to a verified level of protection based on standardized testing protocols. Added to this is Mips® Brain Protection System technology, a low-friction layer integrated between the shell and the liner, designed to reduce the rotational forces transmitted to the skull during an oblique impact. This combination of certifications and technologies helps reduce the risk of injury, though it does not eliminate it entirely.
Comfort, Fit, and Advanced Safety Features
The Fornix BC features a 360° Fit System, which allows for precise and consistent adjustment of the helmet’s fit around the head. The removable ear pads make maintenance easier and allow you to adjust the level of thermal insulation according to conditions. Several features round out the helmet’s safety profile for use in challenging terrain:
- RECCO® reflector: built into the helmet, it allows rescue teams equipped with a compatible detector to locate the wearer in the event of an accident in avalanche-prone terrain.
- twICEme® NFC chip: stores the wearer’s emergency medical information, which can be read by a smartphone, to facilitate rescue efforts.
- Rear-mounted goggle clip: keeps the goggles in place when not in use, for convenient gear management in the field.
Ventilation and Mask Compatibility: Smooth Airflow in All Conditions
The POC Fornix BC ski helmet features passive ventilation with 7 vents, complemented by an adjustable ventilation system that allows you to adapt the airflow based on the intensity of your activity and weather conditions. Ventilation channels specifically positioned for goggles promote airflow between the helmet and the goggles, thereby reducing fogging on the lens. This design is particularly useful during sustained exertion, such as on ski touring ascents or long descents.
Versatile by nature, the POC Fornix BC is designed for skiers looking for a ski and snowboard helmet capable of meeting the demands of both ski touring and days on the slopes, with a consistent level of technical features for both uses.
