Ski touring knives: grip and safety on icy slopes

Ski touring knives are indispensable accessories for skiers who venture off the beaten track. Placed under the bindings, these metal tools reinforce grip on icy surfaces and steep slopes, where sealskins alone are not enough to guarantee a good grip. They are particularly useful for technical passages, exposed slopes or hard snow conditions.

Why use ski touring knives?

When the snow becomes too hard or icy, sealskins lose their effectiveness, which can lead to dangerous slipping when climbing. Ski touring knives, also known as "ski crampons", improve safety by adding points of contact with hard snow. By biting into the ice, they ensure greater stability and make progress on difficult terrain easier and more serene.

How to choose the right ski touring knives?

It's important to choose knives that are compatible with your ski touring bindings. Each brand generally offers models adapted to its own bindings, but there are also universal knives. Make sure you select a knife width that matches that of your skis, for optimum fit. A knife that's too narrow may not offer sufficient grip, while one that's too wide may hinder progress.

Tips for using touring ski knives

Knives are easy to install on ski bindings, usually without removing the skis. Once in place, they provide extra support on icy sections of snow. We recommend installing them as soon as conditions become doubtful, rather than waiting until you're on a tricky section. Removing them on flat or soft snow sections helps maintain a smooth glide.
