THERMAREST: The Brand’s Origins and History
In the early 1970s, Jim Lea, Neil Anderson, and John Burroughs envisioned a solution more comfortable than the simple closed-cell foams used at the time. In 1972, Cascade Designs was founded to market the first Therm-a-Rest self-inflating mattress, the Standard 3/4, billed as the world’s first self-inflating mattress.
THERMAREST was thus born out of a very practical need: to sleep better under the stars in order to perform better the next day in the mountains. The brand was built around a simple yet foundational idea: rest is an integral part of the outdoor experience.

Did you know?
Unlike many brands that outsource entirely, Therm-A-Rest maintains “in-market” production (USA, Ireland) through factories owned by the brand.
Becoming the benchmark for outdoor sleep
From the very beginning, Therm-a-Rest has transformed the way people sleep while camping. Where existing solutions were often limited to thin, poorly insulating foam pads, the brand introduced a more technical approach to sleeping, with products combining comfort, warmth, and packability. Over time, Therm-a-Rest has expanded its expertise with product lines that have become iconic, such as RidgeRest foam pads, NeoAir inflatable mattresses, and sleeping systems combining a mattress, sleeping bag, and pillow. This system-based approach has solidified its position in the world of camping and backpacking.
Product Development and Innovations at THERM-A-REST
The brand offers ultralight mattresses for demanding hikes, thicker models for comfort, and hybrid solutions…
Among its most recognized technical approaches:
- The NeoAir line, designed for backpacking, featuring ultra-lightweight and highly compact inflatable mattresses.
- The 3D construction of the NeoLoft, which aims for maximum comfort with significant thickness and a more stable sleeping surface.
- The TwinLock and WingLock valve systems, designed to simplify and speed up inflation and deflation.
Therm-a-Rest also maintains a strong culture of engineering and product testing, historically linked to Cascade Designs and its production facilities. The brand has built its reputation on products designed to last, be repaired, and withstand many years of use.
Products offered by the THERM-A-REST brand
Inflatable mattresses are the brand’s core offering. The NeoAir and NeoLoft products illustrate two complementary approaches: one focused on lightness and compactness, the other on greater comfort while remaining suitable for camping. Therm-a-Rest also offers closed-cell foam models, such as the Z Lite line, appreciated for its durability, simplicity, and puncture resistance.
THERM-A-REST also develops compact pillows to improve sleep comfort without adding weight to your pack. The brand also offers solutions for more relaxed camping, such as the poncho-blanket—perfect for cool evenings at the campsite!
THERM-A-REST’s Eco-Responsible Commitment
The brand follows a very concrete approach: reducing waste, extending product lifespan, andminimizing the environmental impact of materials and manufacturing. Therm-a-Rest notably reuses foam scraps to make pillows and sells certain scraps to partners capable of giving them a second life, such as in carpet padding.
A significant portion of its products is manufactured locally, particularly in the United States and Ireland, to reduce logistical inefficiencies and better control quality. Finally, new products are developed without PFAS, and existing products are reformulated or replaced when necessary.
