JETBOIL: The Brand’s Origins and History
Jetboil is an American brand founded in 2001 by two engineer cousins, Dwight Aspinwall and Perry Dowst, in a former wool mill. The adventure began when the two cousins grew tired of carrying bulky gas canisters to fuel their stoves while camping. Moving between the lab and the field, Dwight and Perry refined their idea by completely rethinking the concept of portable cooking, and unveiled their new FluxRing® technology along with their integrated approach during the launch of the Personal Cooking System (PCS) in 2004, which was immediately praised by magazines and adventurers worldwide.
Did you know?
To develop the Stash, Product Manager Sara Lawhead set the engineering team a challenge deemed impossible: to reduce the weight of the Flash, the flagship model, by 50%. The initial reaction was that it was impossible, particularly because the FluxRing technology alone accounted for half the total weight. The engineers ultimately analyzed and re-evaluated every component of the stove to remove or lighten anything that wasn’t strictly necessary, resulting in a system weighing approximately 200 g.
Since its launch in 2004, Jetboil cooking systems have won numerous awards both within and outside the outdoor industry. In 2012, the brand was acquired by Johnson Outdoors, a group based in Racine, Wisconsin, and a specialist in outdoor equipment.
Product Development and Innovations at JETBOIL
At the heart of every Jetboil system is the FluxRing: a corrugated aluminum ring attached beneath the pot. This ring serves three essential functions: accelerated heat transfer thanks to an increased contact surface, wind protection by surrounding the flame, and precise power regulation. All Jetboil systems are modular: the pot or cup serves as a container in which all other components (burner, tripod, gas cartridge) can be stored. This saves valuable space in the pack and ensures a stable and secure setup while cooking.
The brand’s history is punctuated by landmark launches: in 2006, the Group Cooking System allowed multiple people to share the same stove; in 2012, the MiniMo offered a miniature version optimized for solo use; and in 2021, the Stash became the most compact Jetboil system ever designed.
In 2025, the best-selling Flash 1.0L and Zip 0.8L were completely redesigned with significant improvements to the flame control knob, the burner base design, and the lid.
Products offered by the JETBOIL brand
The Jetboil range is organized into several product families:
- Integrated stove systems (2-in-1): The Flash is the fastest stove in the lineup; the Zip is the reliable and affordable classic choice for hikers; the MiniMo combines performance and ease of use with a redesigned cup and optimized height for more comfortable eating; the MicroMo offers the ideal balance between lightweight design and performance in extreme conditions with its regulator capable of operating down to -6°C.
- Specialized stoves: the Mightymo is a lightweight, powerful burner (10,000 BTU) compatible with all pots on the market, while the Stash is the most compact system in the range, designed for ultralight adventurers. The Genesis, a dual-burner stove with a pot and frying pan, is designed for base camp.
- Accessories: JetPower gas cartridges (100 g, 230 g, 450 g), universal pot stands, stabilizing tripod, suspension kit, coffee press, Summit Skillet, as well as FluxRing pots and pans compatible with all of the brand’s burners.
