Lowa is a German brand that designs and manufactures hiking, skiing, and mountaineering boots.
What a long way the brand has come since its creation in 1923 in a smallfamily shoe shop in Jentzdorf!
Lowa was born north of Munich, a few dozen kilometers from the Bavarian Prealps, out of the desire of young Lorenz Wagner to equip hikers and mountaineers in his mountainous region with sturdy, reliable shoes that were perfectly suited to these sports. Lorenz Wagner came up with new shoe and sole designs, and in 1930, he opened a new workshop dedicated to this endeavor. The Jentzdorf workshop now produces double-stitched hiking boots made from regional leather and crafted by hand. Laced ski boots for Alpine hunters soon followed.
Lorenz's daughter Berti took over the family business in 1953 with her husband Sepp and continued her father's work. Success soon followed: equipped with Lowa shoes, four young Austrian mountaineers from the Karakorum expedition, Fritz Wintersteller, Marcus Schmuck, Kurt Diemberger, and Hermann Buhl, successfully climbed Broad Peak on June 9, 1957. This was a remarkable first! Located in northern Pakistan, Broad Peak is the12th highest peak in the world, rising to an altitude of 8,051 meters, and climbing it was a major feat at the time. With this successful first, Lowa took a big step forward. The reliability and robustness of its shoes was now proven.
In 1982, the brand turned its attention to trekking and released its first "Trekker" shoe. That same year, Berti and Sepp passed the torch to their son Stefan Lederer. Ten years later, the company was sold to the Italian company Tecnica (Nordica, Rollerblade, Blizzard, and Monn Boot). Under this new transalpine banner, Lowa refocused on its core expertise and business: hiking and mountaineering boots.
Today, its shoes combine the best of technology (grippy and sturdy Vibram soles, Gore-Tex lining) with high-quality, more traditional materials. The leather used in the manufacture of Lowa shoes all comes from certified European tanneries. The brand has also retained its production site in Jentzdorf, and the 2 million pairs of hand-stitched shoes produced each year by Lowa all come from European factories.
