Dakine: origin and history of the brand
Dakine is an American outdoor equipment brand founded in 1979 in Haiku, on the island of Maui (Hawaii), by Rob Kaplan, initially with one flagship product: the high-performance surf leash.
In the mid-1980s, the brand moved its base of operations to Hood River, Oregon, a major wind and mountain sports spot, which accelerated its expansion into windsurfing, snowboarding, skiing, and biking.
Did you know?
The name DAKINE comes from the Hawaiian pidgin "da kine" (literally "the kind"), which means "the best" or "that thing" and has become synonymous with reliable board sports equipment.
Product development and innovation at Dakine
Very early on, Dakine developed groundbreaking technical products for wind sports: the first adjustable foot strap for windsurfing (1980), waist harnesses, then seat harnesses, and finally thermo-molded harnesses, which became the standard in the discipline.
From the 1990s to the 2000s, the brand became known to the general public for its backpacks, luggage, and snowboard and ski bags, which combine highly functional internal organization, durability, and a distinctive "West Coast" aesthetic.
The range gradually expanded to include snow gloves, outdoor clothing, technical cycling clothing, surf/snow accessories (leashes, pads, boot bags, board bags, etc.) as well as travel bags and trolleys.
Products offered by the Dakine brand
Dakine opts for a clever mix of advanced functionality and style, with seasonal collections that follow street and surf fashion trends. The brand is particularly known for its extroverted designs: colorful prints, stripes, flowers, but also sober colors (gray, black) for more urban or professional use.
Dakine's identity emphasizes a spirit of adventure, freedom, and travel: the equipment is designed as much for dedicated riders as for a wider audience who want a casual, sporty look.
Dakine's commitment to environmental responsibility
Dakine promotes a sustainability-oriented policy, havingabandoned PVC in its products, which is considered too harmful to the environment, in favor of alternative materials.
The brand offers a PET range made from 100% recycled plastic bottles, which has been part of its collection for several years, as well as products made from recycled polyester or materials sourced from recycled fishing nets (NetPlus).
