There are two disciplines in cross-country skiing:
The classic or alternative step is the most traditional technique where you progress with the skis in parallel. To avoid going backwards when climbing, cross-country skis use different anti-recoil devices:
- competition skis, a special retaining wax called Klister that is applied to a middle surface of the ski base. It is sometimes more difficult to implement because you have to consider the temperature of the snow when choosing wax and wax at the last minute.
- recreational or sports skis use scales. Theoretically, we have a little less sliding, but it's more secure.
In recent years, Nordic ski brands have developed an anti-recoil system based on synthetic skins that is becoming more and more efficient.
A discipline apart from cross-country skiing is cross-country skiing. Specific equipment (wider skis, stronger bindings, stiffer boots) is then used to get away from the groomed slopes.
Skating is the sportier version of cross-country skiing. We progress by taking skating steps, there is no anti-recoil system. It's more physical than classic cross-country skiing but we also go much faster. The skis are different. We take them shorter, the spatulas are rounded. Skating boots are stiffer with a much higher collar to hold the foot and transmit impulses.
