1. Choosing the size of your touring skis

For an uninformed skier, choosing the right size for your touring skis may seem difficult.

However, it is quite simple in practice, depending on your level, you will have to take skis larger or smaller than your height.

Beginner level : between -5cm and -8cm than your height.

Intermediate / expert level: your height see up to +5cm

In practice, the longer the length of the skis, the less the handling of the skis in turns, but the less you sink into the powder and the faster you go downhill.

Of course, the longer the skis are, the heavier they are when climbing.

After the length of the skis, you have to choose their width:

The wider the skis (over 95mm), the less they will sink into the powder on the way down but the more friction they will create on the way up and the heavier they will be. On the other hand, narrow skis (less than 80mm) will be less stable on the way down but will allow for greater vertical drops on the way up because they will be lighter and create less friction.

For beginners, medium width skis (80mm to 95mm) offer a good compromise between climbing and descending, stability and weight.

2. The fixings

Ski touring bindings come in two technologies:

Low-tech bindings with inserts:

They are lighter than plate bindings, are also more efficient when climbing. However, they are only compatible with boots with inserts.

Diamir plate bindings:

They look like the bindings used in alpine skiing, they are therefore compatible with all ski boots but are heavier than the bindings with inserts. This weight is felt in particular by the fact that during each step, you have to lift the whole binding with your foot.

These bindings with plates are however more precise in descent and are therefore generally preferred by skiers practicing freerando.

3. Seal skins

The sealskins were traditionally made of real sealskin, nowadays they are made of synthetic material: nylon or mohair, or both mixed.

The principle is simple, the “hairs” of the sealskin slide in one direction and adhere in the other. So when you go up, you can slide your skis forward to progress but you will not slide backwards if the snow is good. In case of icy snow the sealskins are not always effective and will sometimes have to be associated with metal knives, which play the role of “crampons” anti-backward.

The sealskins are generally glued, that is to say that they hold on the sole of the ski thanks to glue, sometimes a fastener is also present on the back of the skin and is fixed on the heel of the ski to prevent the skins from coming off because of the cold.
